Add your first book

Your library starts empty. There are four ways to fill it, and you can reach all of them from Add text in your library or from the import page.

Pick a way in

• File. Upload a PDF, EPUB, Word document or one of the other supported formats. See import formats and size limits for the full list.
• Web URL. Paste the address of an article. We fetch a personal reading copy for you, like a read-it-later app. Pages that are paywalled or ask not to be archived are skipped.
• Paste. Paste up to 500,000 characters of text. A line that starts with # becomes a chapter heading. The title is optional.
• Project Gutenberg. Search by title, author or book number and import any public-domain book in one click.

Every import asks you to confirm that you have the right to use the text and that you are importing it for your own personal learning.

Not sure where to start?

When your library is empty you will see a Try a starter book button. It adds The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a short public-domain story, so you can try the reader straight away. It counts as one book towards your library limit.

Open it

Select a book in your library to open it in the reader. From there you can make a pre-reading guide, highlight and take notes, or ask for an explanation of a hard passage.
